Split systems in Melbourne homes
Split systems are the most common air conditioner in Melbourne homes: one indoor head on the wall, one outdoor unit, and a refrigerant line between them. A well-sized unit will heat and cool a room for 12 to 15 years if it is serviced. What fails first is almost always the cheap stuff: a blocked drain that drips on the wall, a dirty coil that cuts output and smells musty, or a capacitor that leaves the outdoor fan humming. Those are an hour's work. Compressor and PCB failures on units past ten years are where repair stops making sense.
Brands we work on: Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Fujitsu, Panasonic, LG, Samsung, Kelvinator, Rinnai, Hitachi, Toshiba.
Signs you need a technician
- Water dripping from the indoor unit
- Musty smell when it starts up
- Blowing but not cooling or heating
- Outdoor unit humming or clicking without the fan spinning
- Error code or flashing light on the indoor unit
- Running constantly and the room never gets there
When to replace instead of repair
Once a split system is past ten years old and needs a compressor, PCB or refrigerant leak repair, a new unit usually costs less over the next five years than keeping the old one going. We'll tell you which side of that line you're on.
Replacement optionsCommon questions
How long does a split system last?
12 to 15 years with annual servicing; 8 to 10 without.
What size do I need?
Roughly 2.5 kW for a bedroom, 3.5 kW for a living room up to 25 m², 5 to 7 kW for open-plan. Ceiling height, glass and insulation all shift that, so we size on site.
Can one outdoor unit run several rooms?
Yes, that is a multi-head split. One outdoor unit, two to five indoor heads. Good where outdoor space is limited.
How much does it cost to run?
A 3.5 kW unit draws about 1 kW on a mild day, so an hour costs roughly 30 cents at current Victorian rates. Heating on a cold morning costs more; a dirty filter adds 10 to 20 percent on top.
